The shelves of pharmacies are weighed down with bottles and packets of products that tout they can detox your body. But do you really need these pills and potions to keep your body tip top?

The truth is your liver is busy detoxifying every minute of every day from the daily barrage of toxins that enter our bodies.  So when you are being sold so called detox products, just know that your body is doing this constantly through the liver and several other detox systems which the body has already inbuilt.

Everything we eat, breathe, rub into our skin, and touch goes through the liver.  This organ is responsible for filtering the blood and disposing of harmful toxins and chemicals in our system.

The liver works 24/7, and this filtering process, if not in tip-top condition, can take a toll on your body, causing damage and early ageing. We need to take proper care of it to ensure its optimal functionality. And how do we do this? The key words are DETOX and CLEANSE.

Do you get headaches or anxious from drinking just one cup of coffee? Do strong smells make you lightheaded? Are you feeling bloated, tired, and foggy all the time? It might be time to do a liver spring clean. If you wish to look and feel young for a longer time, then detox/cleanse is a great thing to do. A little cleanse goes a long way, with health benefits including an increase in energy, better sleep, younger-looking skin, stronger joints, and even weight loss.

If you follow these three steps, you can aid your body’s natural detox process without having to use detox aids. If you are really serious about detoxing, stop eating processed & packaged foods and eating a diet high in sugar and fats.

  1. Avoid stress.

Stress leads to binge-eating, binge-drinking, and binge-smoking, all of which overwork the liver due to the excessive intake of chemicals. Next time you’re feeling stressed, sweat it out with a good run!

  1. Load up on nutrients.

Amino acids aid the liver pathways. Cruciferous vegetables, garlic, onions, leeks, and shallots all contain good amounts of sulphur and amino acids, which aid liver pathways and enhance chemical breakdown phases. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties that benefit the liver, so make sure to add a little to your next curry or stir-fry.

Eat at least 5 servings of vegetables and 3 servings of fruits which contain zinc, methionine, and vitamins C and B6 to aid the detox process. Make sure to include lemons, limes, asparagus, grapefruit and beetroot juice in your diet.

  1. Water, water, water.

A great way to detox your liver is to detox other channels of elimination. The kidney works in conjunction with the liver, eliminating water-soluble toxins, so keep it hydrated with some good ol’ H20. Drinking at least eight glasses of water naturally cleanses your system, flushing harmful toxins out.

Taking good care of your body is relatively easy, and doesn’t take much sacrifice. With a little discipline, you will look and feel your best in the long run, with only yourself to thank.
