Sick of being sick?
The secrets behind a long and healthy life.
Nutritional medicine is the art of using nutrition to reverse and support medical conditions. It is the scientific study of how the nutrients in food affect health and wellbeing. A nutritional medicine practitioner uses food, diet and lifestyle modifications and their therapeutic potential to treat a wide range of health conditions. They will use the principals of Hippocrates, ‘let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food’, when treating a patient.
A nutritional medicine practitioner focuses on treating the ‘whole’ patient, not just the symptoms. They will aim to get to the root cause of a problem and treat it using diet and lifestyle modifications. The guiding principal behind Flourish is to educate the patient so that they are able to engage in ‘self care’, and together develop measures to reverse dis-ease and prevent recurrence.
About the founder
Kathy Ashton is the founder and head of Flourish Nutritional Medicine. She is a Nutritional Medicine Practitioner. What does this mean? She has a Health Science degree specialising in using foods/nutrition to heal the body.
She understands which foods benefit the body from a biochemical point of view, and how to use food to treat specific chronic illnesses such as Hashimotos, Adrenal Fatigue, Leaky Gut, Type II Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, Multiple Sclerosis amongst others. Her passion and the mission of Flourish Nutritional Medicine is to make a difference in people’s lives; to heal people one person at a time, by helping them make small changes, which make huge differences. Flourish Nutritional Medicine’s guiding focus is to inspire and empower people to make informed decisions regarding food.
Kathy’s key areas of interest are Hashimotos (hypothyroidism), adrenal fatigue and the immune system. She loves to find the link between disease processes, rectify the imbalance and watch the patient flourish. Kathy is a leading authority on using whole foods to heal the body. She is a highly sought after speaker, mindset and life coach. Her powerful and passionate presentations enlighten and educate those who want an answer to why they are feeling sick all the time or those just wanting to embark on a new lease on life and health. What that means is she knows her stuff. Using science and bio-chemistry, research and truths, she debunks the confusion that emanates from all the mixed messages which are currently being spouted in the marketplace. She lives and breathes what she teaches. Kathy has spoken in front of many crowds around the country. When you sit in front of her, there is no doubt she is an expert in her field. She has the uncanny knack of explaining complex science in a layman’s way, making it understandable to all of us. She leaves her audience and clients with a sense of wonderment and wanting more and she delivers. She has developed tools and resources to help people make the changes needed with ease and subsequently thrive. Kathy is dedicated to showing people food is the great healer. It is often a significant event in life that determines the path we tread. For Kathy, it was her and her husband’s health, which played a significant role in the career path she has taken. Kathy has always worked with people, helping them.
Her work as a remedial massage therapist and lecturer in musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology was fueled by her desire to educate others in how to live pain free and well. Her nutritional medicine journey began in her 30s after she developed an autoimmune disease called Fibromyalgia. Despite being fit and thinking her diet was “spot on”, Kathy was constantly in pain and on a cocktail of drugs. She started to wonder if her love of sugar was in some way to blame.
The mainstream health professionals emphatically denied any link between food and disease. Her body told her something different. She went cold turkey – giving up sugar. Within a week, most of the pain had receded. By the time she saw her doctor again, she was pain free. Her doctor described her as a ‘medical miracle’ because there were no studies proving the absence of sugar had any significant impact on overall health. What happened next was the pivotal moment in Kathy’s life – her husband was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2003. Told by doctors there was nothing that could be done, Kathy and Chris ignored it until it got worse. Determined to help him, Kathy went back to University obtaining a science degree in Nutritional Medicine. She continues with her education, currently furthering her studies at Cornell University.
Today Chris is flourishing. Kathy’s practice has transformed many lives, guiding people to make the small adjustments needed to deliver incredible life changing results. Results which show improvements in sleep, vitality, clarity, energy, reduced anxiety, easy and sustainable weight loss and a reduction in medication and symptoms from a whole host of chronic diseases. Kathy believes change is only one decision away.
The amount you wish to change is entirely up to you. A guide, mentor and teacher, Kathy knows the body is an incredible healing machine, which only requires the right fuel to heal itself. Through her programs and retreats, she teaches the truth behind food, what is healthy to eat, what should be minimised or avoided and most importantly, how to put it all together in a sustainable way in your life. Kathy is married to Chris (who is forever grateful to his wife for her passion and determination to make his life better), has three adult children and lives in Melbourne, Victoria.
